The 140th Wing is an operational unit of the United States Air Force (USAF) within the Air National Guard. It falls under the jurisdiction of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and operates primarily out of Barnes Air National Guard Base, Westfield, Massachusetts. Established in 1946 as a fighter squadron during the post-World War II drawdown, the 140th Wing's mission has evolved over time to include air defense, close air support, combat search and rescue, and strategic airlift capabilities. The wing operates various aircraft such as the F-15C Eagle, HC-130J Combat King II, and C-130H Hercules. The 140th Wing is composed of over 2,000 Airmen and serves both state and federal missions, providing air defense for New England and supporting contingency operations around the world when called upon.
