Description

A shield blazoned: Or, a pile bendwise Gules, and overall a horse courant Argent, on a chief Azure a mullet of the third. Attached below the shield is a silver scroll inscribed "NEVER BROKEN" in black.

Symbolism

The red and gold colors reflect the Spanish heritage of Nevada and the branches of Armor-Cavalry and Artillery in which the 221st and its predecessors have served. The red pile represents the blast trail of an artillery rocket, referencing the 221st’s role as one of the few Rocket Artillery organizations in the U.S. Army during World War II. The mustang, a hardy breed descended from Spanish Conquistador warhorses and native to Nevada, symbolizes a combat maneuver unit. The star, taken from the Nevada State Flag, along with the blue and silver (white) colors, represents the state’s official colors.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 221st Armor Regiment on September 18, 1981. It was redesignated for the 221st Cavalry Regiment on December 10, 1997.
