The 85th Infantry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army that has played significant roles in various conflicts throughout its history. Originally activated on August 15, 1942, during World War II, it was primarily composed of African American troops until desegregation in the U.S. military. The regiment saw action in the European Theater as part of the 93rd Infantry Division, participating in campaigns such as Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Post-World War II, the 85th Infantry Regiment was reorganized into a separate battalion within the 10th Mountain Division, serving during the Korean War and Cold War era. In the early 1960s, it was redesignated as the 85th Chemical Mortar Battalion. During the Vietnam War, the unit served as an advisory team to the South Vietnamese Army. In recent years, the 85th Infantry Regiment has undergone multiple name changes and reorganizations, currently existing as a part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The regiment's motto is "Semper Paratus," meaning Always Ready, reflecting its historical commitment to readiness and service.
