The 9th Cavalry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army that originated during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. Initially established as an African American regiment, it was one of six all-black cavalry units created by the U.S. Army in 1866. Known as "Horse Soldiers," the 9th Cavalry has a rich history of service that includes participation in numerous significant military campaigns, including the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, and both World Wars. The regiment was deactivated in 1954 but reorganized and redesignated as part of the U.S. Army Reserve in 1985. Today, it serves as a component of the Army's First Cavalry Division.
