Albert Sidney Johnston was a prominent American military officer who served during the U.S. Civil War. Born in Kentucky in 1803, Johnston graduated from West Point in 1826 and went on to hold various positions within the U.S. Army, including serving under General Zachary Taylor during the Mexican-American War. During the American Civil War, Johnston was appointed as a general of the Confederate States Army, becoming the first full general of the Confederacy. He played significant roles in several major battles, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Perryville. On the battlefield at Shiloh, Johnston suffered a severe leg wound that ultimately proved fatal. He is remembered for his strategic acumen and leadership abilities, and he remains one of the highest-ranking Confederate generals to have been killed in action during the Civil War. His legacy continues to be studied and debated within military history circles due to his significant contributions to the early days of the war.
