Andersonville Prison, Ga., August 17, 1864. Bird's Eye View (U.S. Civil War) This artwork presents a bird's-eye view of Andersonville Prison in Georgia during the American Civil War on August 17, 1864. The prison, also known as Camp Sumter, was used by the Confederacy to hold Union prisoners of war. The image provides an overview of the vast, irregularly shaped prisoner-of-war stockade enclosing thousands of tents, barracks, and makeshift shelters housing more than 32,000 Union soldiers at its peak capacity. Notorious for harsh conditions and poor sanitation, Andersonville Prison became synonymous with suffering and disease, resulting in approximately 13,000 deaths due to starvation, disease, and exposure before its closure in November 1864. The 'Bird's Eye View' serves as a historical document depicting the grim reality of the Confederacy's treatment of Union prisoners during the Civil War.
