'Army of Potomac (U.S. Civil War)' The Army of the Potomac refers to the principal Union army in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War from November 1861 until June 1865, responsible for most of the major campaigns against the Confederate States Army. Key commanders of this army included Maj. Gen. John C. Parke, Maj. Gen. Carl Schurz Meade, Maj. Gen. William S. Hancock, Maj. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Maj. Gen. Andrew A. Humphreys, and Maj. Gen. Horatio Wright. The Army of the Potomac played a significant role in several decisive battles such as Antietam, Gettysburg, and Appomattox. After numerous command changes, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant was appointed overall commander in March 1864, leading to the successful Union siege of Petersburg and the final surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.
