Coat of Arms of the Republic of the United Netherlands (After 1665) The coat of arms displayed represents that of the Republic of the United Netherlands, which was established after the Union of Utrecht in 1713, following the dissolution of the Spanish Netherlands. This design emerged post-1665 and has remained largely consistent since then. The shield is divided into four quadrants, with each representing a province: Friesland (blue field with a gold St. George's cross), Holland (quartered with a black lion in the first and fourth quarters, and a white horse in the second and third), Zeeland (a golden lion rampant in a blue field), and Guelders-Overijssel (a black field bearing three white lions passant guardant). Above the shield, there is an arch with five towers representing the seven provinces (the additional two are represented by empty spaces to symbolize their union under one authority). The arch is adorned with five fleurs-de-lis on either side and a chief in the center bearing the initials 'PR' for Prins (Prince) of Orange. Beneath the shield, there is a golden escutcheon that displays a black lion, which symbolizes the Nassau family, the Princes of Orange. The motto, "Je maintiendrai" (I shall maintain), inscribed in letters of gold on a black ribbon, is placed below the escutcheon. This coat of arms reflects the federal structure of the Republic of the United Netherlands and its strong association with the House of Orange-Nassau.
