The Flag of Kochi Prefecture in Japan is a rectangular banner divided into two vertical sections by a central white stripe that represents Mt. Shiro, a significant landmark within the prefecture. The left section, occupying about 2/3 of the flag's height, features a red field symbolizing the sun and representing the prefecture's name (Kōchi, which means "eight islands" in Japanese). The right section, taking up the remaining 1/3, is white, signifying snow-covered Mt. Shiro. This design was officially adopted on November 20, 1966, following the merger of Kochi Prefecture with Tosa and Awa provinces. The flag serves as a symbol of Kochi Prefecture's unique history and cultural identity within Japan.
