STS 98, or Shuttle-Tether Experiment (STE) mission 98, was a space flight conducted by NASA using Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103). Launched on January 19, 2001, the primary objectives of this mission included the deployment and retrieval of a 50-foot (15 m) tether to study its effects in space, as well as servicing the Hubble Space Telescope. The crew consisted of six astronauts: Commander Robert Curbeam, Pilot Frederick Sturckow, and Mission Specialists Charles Hobaugh, Marsha Ivins, James Voss, and Michael Lopez-Alegria. The mission ended successfully on January 31, 2001, after spending 12 days in space. The results from this mission provided valuable data on the behavior of conductive tethers in the microgravity environment of space.
