The United States Army's Special Operations Command North (SOCNorth) is a specialized military unit primarily responsible for conducting and supporting unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, and counter-insurgency operations in the U.S. Northern Command area of responsibility (AOR), which encompasses North America and surrounding waters. Established in 2006 as a subordinate command of U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), SOCNorth is headquartered at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, and reports to both USSOCOM and Northern Command. The unit's primary mission is to coordinate, synchronize, and support the special operations forces within its AOR to ensure readiness for potential crises and contingencies while building and maintaining strong relationships with partner nations in the region.
