The 12 Cavalry Regiment is an armored cavalry regiment of the United States Army. Established on July 30, 1861, during the American Civil War, it has a rich history spanning over 160 years. Originally created as the 1st U.S. Cavalry, the unit was redesignated to its current number in 1957. The regiment is part of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment (Airborne) and is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Throughout its history, the 12th Cavalry has participated in numerous conflicts, including the Indian Wars, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The regiment's mission is to provide readiness for prompt employment through training, preparation for contingency operations, and rapid response to support combatant commanders' objectives in defense of the United States and its allies.
