139th Pennsylvania Infantry (U.S. Civil War) The 139th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment was a military unit formed during the American Civil War in response to President Lincoln's call for troops on July 2, 1864. Comprised mainly of men from central and northeastern Pennsylvania, the regiment served under the command of the United States Army's Department of Washington and took part in various campaigns and engagements, including the Battle of Fort Stevens, a significant defense for Washington D.C. The unit was mustered out on July 9, 1865, having contributed to the eventual Union victory in the Civil War. The 139th Pennsylvania Infantry played an important role in preserving the nation during one of its most turbulent periods.
