The 17th New York Infantry was a military unit raised for service during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Originally part of the National Guard, it was mustered into the U.S. Army on May 29, 1861, and served under various command structures. Known as "Clinton's Zouaves," the regiment participated in several major battles, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chancellorsville. It was mustered out of service on July 23, 1865, having played a significant role in the Union's efforts to preserve the United States during the Civil War. The 17th New York Infantry is notable for its unique Zouave uniform and its contributions to various key engagements throughout the conflict.
