The 23rd New York Infantry Regiment was a military unit raised for service during the American Civil War. Established in July 1862, it primarily served under the Federal Army, participating in several significant battles such as Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House. Known as "Carl Schurz's German Regiment" due to its commander's background, the unit was composed of mostly German immigrants. The regiment saw over 3 years of active service before being mustered out in June 1865 following the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House.
