The 23rd New York Infantry was a military unit that served during the U.S. Civil War under the Union forces. Raised primarily from German immigrants residing in New York City, it was also known as the "Rochester Light Artillery" or "Roch's Royals." The regiment participated in several significant battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania Court House. Notably, the 23rd New York Infantry was part of the famous Iron Brigade, a group of five regiments known for their staunch resistance against Confederate forces throughout the war. The regiment was mustered out of service in July 1864 after sustaining heavy losses.
