The "23rd New York Infantry (2nd)" was a regiment of the Union Army during the American Civil War, active from 1862 to 1865. Also known as the "First Regiment of Cadets," it was one of several volunteer infantry units raised in response to President Abraham Lincoln's call for troops to suppress the Confederate rebellion. The regiment saw action in major battles such as Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Chancellorsville. Notable among its leaders was Colonel James B.
