The 29th Infantry Division is a formation of the United States Army, known for its significant role during World War I and II. Established in 1917, it was one of the first divisions organized in the National Army created by the Selective Service Act of that year. During World War I, the division served on the Western Front and took part in major offensives such as the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. In World War II, the 29th was part of the Normandy Invasion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge among other engagements in Europe. The 29th Infantry Division is historically associated with the state of Georgia, as it was designated as a National Guard division and its personnel were primarily drawn from this state. However, during wartime, soldiers may come from across the nation and all branches of service. The division's shoulder sleeve insignia features a red shield with a blue Celtic cross on one side and a silver fleur-de-lis on the other, symbolizing Georgia and France, respectively, in recognition of the division's service in World War I under French command.
