Description/Blazon

A shield blazoned: Azure, a saltire couped Argent, overall a puela in pale Or. On a canton of the second, a lion passant guardant Gules (representing the 1st and 2nd Infantry). Attached above on a wreath Argent and Azure is a mahiole Or garnished Gules.

Symbolism

The Regiment was organized in August 1916 on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii, from the 1st and 2nd Infantry. The canton features a lion, signifying the involvement of both regiments in the War of 1812. The central device is derived from the royal Hawaiian arms, reflecting the Regiment’s origin. The puela, an ancient Hawaiian banner used in front of the King’s tent for both tabu and protection, is represented by the saltire cross in the design. The colors of the crest represent the royal Hawaiian colors, and the crest depicts a mahiole, an ancient Hawaiian war bonnet.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 5 March 1929.
