The regiment was composed of nine companies and was known for its service in the defense of Washington, D.C., as well as its active role in the campaigns of Major General George G. Meade. The 33rd New York Infantry 001, also known as the "French Zouaves," were distinguished by their unique uniform, modeled after the North African military units, which included colorful, exotic-style clothing and turbans.
