33rd New York Infantry 010 (U.S. Civil War) The 33rd New York Infantry, also known as the "New York State Militia," was a regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The specific designation "010" likely refers to the unit's organization number within the New York State Militia. Raised primarily in New York City in May 1861, the regiment consisted of ten companies, each with approximately 100 men. It was mustered into the U.S. service on July 26, 1861, with Col. Charles Whipple as its commanding officer. The 33rd New York Infantry participated in several significant campaigns and battles throughout the Civil War, including the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness Fight, and the Siege of Petersburg. The regiment suffered heavy casualties during these engagements, with over 250 men killed in action or dying from wounds sustained during the war. After the war ended, the 33rd New York Infantry was mustered out of service on August 19, 1865. The unit's contributions to preserving the Union and restoring peace following the Civil War are commemorated in military records and historical accounts.
