The 355th Fighter Wing (355 FW) is an operational wing of the United States Air Force (USAF), headquartered at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. As part of the 12th Air Force and Air Combat Command (ACC), the wing's primary mission involves the employment, maintenance, and training with the F-35 Lightning II multi-role combat aircraft. The 355 FW is also known for its heritage in air-to-air combat and has contributed significantly to USAF efforts since World War II. Other missions include Air Defense, Close Air Support, Combat Search and Rescue, Counter Air, Defensive Counter Air, Deep Strike, Offensive Counter Air, Reconnaissance, and Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses. The wing was activated in 1943 as the 56th Fighter Group, transitioning through various designations before adopting its current name in 1987.
