The 48th Armored Division is a unit of the United States Army that has served in various capacities since its activation in World War II. It was first activated on September 1, 1942, at Camp Polk, Louisiana, as part of the U.S. Army's expansion in preparation for the war. The division saw combat in Europe during World War II and was deactivated following the end of hostilities. The division was reactivated on July 18, 1952, during the Cold War era as part of the U.S. Army's response to the growing threat of the Soviet Union. It played a significant role in the defense of Western Europe and was stationed in various locations throughout Germany until it was deactivated again on April 15, 1963. The 48th Armored Division was reactivated for a third time on January 17, 1985, as part of the U.S. Army's response to the Soviet Union's increased military presence in Eastern Europe. It was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and served in various roles until it was deactivated once more on May 16, 2004. Throughout its history, the 48th Armored Division has been a vital part of the U.S. Army's ability to defend the United States and its allies. Despite undergoing multiple activations and deactivations, it continues to be remembered for its service and sacrifice in times of war and peace.
