The 49th Armored Division is a historical military unit of the United States Army, primarily active during World War II. It was officially activated on February 15, 1943, and disbanded in 1946 after the end of World War II. The division's initial formation took place at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, with subsequent training at other locations including California and Georgia. The 49th Armored Division consisted primarily of armored vehicles such as tanks, half-tracks, and other mechanized combat equipment. It served under various commands during the European Theater of World War II, participating in significant campaigns, including Normandy (D-Day landings), Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), and Central Europe. The 49th Armored Division was known as "The Red Diamond" due to its insignia featuring a red diamond with white stars representing the four divisions within an armored corps. The unit's motto was "Semper Vi et Vigilant" which translates to "Always with Force and Vigilance." The 49th Armored Division is a significant part of U.S. military history, contributing to the Allied victory in World War II. However, it does not exist as an active unit within the modern United States Army.
