The 5th Infantry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army, traceable back to the formation of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War in 1861. Originally known as the "German Regiment," it later became the "Fifth United States Infantry" in 1869. This regiment has seen significant action throughout U.S. history, participating in conflicts such as the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The 5th Infantry Regiment is currently part of the United States Army's 2nd Infantry Division stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State. It has earned numerous battle honors and unit awards throughout its history.
