A.T.A. Torbert (U.S. Civil War) Andrew Thomas Alcott Torbert was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War, best known for his role in the Gettysburg Campaign and the subsequent Battle of Gettysburg. Born on October 9, 1833, in Norwalk, Connecticut, Torbert served as a brevet major general in the U.S. Volunteers and later as a brigadier general in the regular army. He participated in several significant engagements, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Bristoe Station. His leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg, particularly his role in the delayed arrival of his troops on July 2, 1863, has been a subject of historical debate. After the war, Torbert served as the Governor of Dakota Territory from 1879 to 1881 and later worked in the U.S. Customs Service until his death on October 23, 1899.
