A.T.A. Torbert (U.S. Civil War) A.T.A. Torbert, whose full name was Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert, was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War. Born in 1833, he served as a colonel and later as a major general in the Union Army. Torbert played significant roles in several important battles, such as Gettysburg and Antietam. He is particularly known for his leadership during the 1864 Bristoe Campaign, where he commanded the Cavalry Corps. Despite some criticisms regarding certain tactical decisions, Torbert's military career spanned over three decades, culminating in his retirement as a brigadier general in 1902.
