Adams, C.S.A. (U.S. Civil War) Charles Lewis Stevenson Adams (1807–1886), an American politician and statesman, served as the United States Ambassador to Great Britain from 1853 to 1858, during the early stages of the U.S. Civil War. Despite his strong anti-slavery stance, Adams found himself in the Confederate States of America (C.S.A.) as the U.S. Civil War broke out. He served as the President of the Confederacy's provisional government from 1865 until its dissolution later that year. Adams is notable for his efforts to broker a peace treaty between the Union and the Confederacy, but the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the subsequent military defeat of the Confederacy prevented any such arrangement.
