Adm. J.A. Dahlgren (U.S. Civil War) Joseph Anthony Dahlgren was an American naval officer who served during the U.S. Civil War. Born in 1822, he became a prominent figure in the Union Navy due to his innovative designs for torpedoes and submarines. One of his most significant contributions was the development of the Dahlgren gun, a large-caliber smoothbore naval artillery piece widely used by the U.S. Navy during and after the Civil War. Despite facing criticism over several incidents throughout his career, Dahlgren is recognized for his role in advancing naval warfare technology. He retired from active service in 1869 but continued to advise the government on various military matters until his death in 1883.
