The Alabama National Guard is a component of the United States National Guard, organized and managed by the U.S. Department of Defense and the State of Alabama to ensure the preservation of peace, unity, and freedom within Alabama and support federal mission requirements as needed. It operates under the governorship of Alabama and the command of the Commanding General, Alabama National Guard. The Alabama National Guard consists of the Alabama Army National Guard and the Alabama Air National Guard, providing a diverse range of units, missions, and capabilities including combat, homeland defense, civil support, and more. The force is primarily composed of citizen-soldiers and airmen who train part-time, but can be mobilized full-time when needed. Members are expected to serve at least one weekend each month and up to two weeks annually for training, in addition to their civilian responsibilities.
