The Marshall House, located at the intersection of King and Pitt Streets in Alexandria, Virginia, holds historical significance as a site that played an important role during the U.S. Civil War. Constructed in 1790, the building served as a hospital for Confederate soldiers during the conflict. The Marshall House was first used as a military hospital in 1861 when the Confederate Army took control of Alexandria. It continued to function as a hospital until the end of the war in 1865. During its service, the house treated thousands of wounded soldiers from both Union and Confederate forces, as it was one of the few remaining hospitals in the area following the Battle of Alexandria. The Marshall House has since been restored to resemble its original appearance and is now a museum operated by the Alexandria Museum of History. Visitors can tour the house and learn about the lives of the soldiers who were treated there, as well as the impact of the U.S. Civil War on Alexandria and the surrounding region. The Marshall House stands as an important reminder of the human toll of war and a testament to the resilience and perseverance of those who lived through it.
