Flag of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan The Flag of Fukushima Prefecture is a symbol of the administrative region located in the Tohoku region on the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan's largest island. Adopted on April 30, 1965, it represents the unique history and characteristics of the prefecture. The flag features three horizontal stripes of equal size. From left to right, they are colored white, red, and black. The red stripe, which is the central one, is inscribed with a stylized sun known as the "Nishin no Kuni Hitoe-Gi" (Sun Sails Over the Land of Rice Fields) or simply the "Fukushima Mon." This emblem is a traditional pattern that can be found on ancient pottery from the area, dating back to the Kofun period. The sun symbol represents the prefecture's historical name, "Fukushima no Kuni," which means "the country where rice fields thrive under the sunlight." The flag serves as a visual representation of Fukushima Prefecture's history and its connection to agriculture, particularly rice farming, which has been a significant part of the region's economy and culture.
