The design symbolizes the city's historical connection to Lafayette Marquis de La Fayette, who played a significant role in the American Revolution and was born in Chavaniac, France, on September 6, 1757. This date is commemorated with the thirteen rays of the sun, signifying independence and freedom. The flag was officially adopted by the Lafayette City Council on August 24, 1983.
