**** Soyuz 3 (Soyuz Space Program)
The Soyuz 3 was a manned spaceflight mission launched by the Soviet Union as part of the Soyuz program on October 16, 1968. This marked the third crewed flight for the Soyuz spacecraft. The mission's primary objectives included docking with Soyuz 2 (Soyuz 7K-L1) and conducting an extravehicular activity (EVA).
The spacecraft was piloted by cosmonaut Georgi Beregovoy, and the backup crew consisted of Vladimir Shatalov and Alexei Yeliseyev. During the mission, Soyuz 3 experienced problems with its attitude control system that made rendezvous and docking difficult. Despite these complications, an attempt was made to link up with Soyuz 2. However, due to a malfunction in the docking mechanism, the two spacecraft could not connect.
In addition to its intended objectives, Soyuz 3 also marked the first occasion on which a reentry and landing of a manned spacecraft was broadcast live on television. The mission ended successfully when Beregovoy returned to Earth safely on October 19, 1968. Although Soyuz 3 did not achieve its primary objectives, it contributed valuable data for further improvements in the Soyuz program.
The Soyuz spacecraft is a multiple-use spacecraft developed by the Soviet Union (later Russia) for both manned and unmanned spaceflights. It has been extensively used as a space ferry since 1967, transporting astronauts to and from the Space Station Mir, as well as the International Space Station (ISS). The Soyuz space program continues to be an essential element of Russian human space flight operations and international space cooperation.
