The Soyuz MS-03 was a crewed spacecraft flight, part of the Soyuz program operated by Roscosmos (the Russian federal space agency). Launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on April 20, 2016, Soyuz MS-03 carried three astronauts: Commander Sergey Ryazansky of Roscosmos, Flight Engineer Michael Fossum of NASA, and Flight Engineer Oleg Novitskiy of Roscosmos. They docked with the International Space Station (ISS) later that day and spent 186 days in space before returning to Earth on October 30, 2016. The Soyuz MS-03 mission marked the first long-duration stay on the ISS for Fossum and Novitskiy, and Ryazansky's second flight to the station following his previous mission in 2013. This spacecraft is a modified version of the Soyuz spacecraft, which has been in service since 1967, featuring improved systems and capabilities compared to its predecessors. The Soyuz MS-03 mission contributed to various scientific research projects on board the ISS and supported regular crew rotation for international partners involved in the program.
