The 17th Cavalry Regiment is a military unit within the United States Army, serving under the U.S. Army aviation branch. It was activated in 1956 and has since been deployed in various global conflicts such as the Vietnam War, Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan. Initially established as a helicopter cavalry unit, it transitioned to air assault operations during the Vietnam era, and later to airborne operations with the introduction of the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. The regiment is headquartered at Fort Hood, Texas, and is part of the United States Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Rucker's 1st Air Cavalry Brigade.
