17th Maine Infantry Volunteers (U.S. Civil War) The 17th Maine Infantry Volunteers were a regiment of the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving from May 1861 to July 1865. Organized in response to President Lincoln's call for volunteers, they primarily served in the Eastern Theater, participating in key battles such as the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness Campaign. Notable commanders included Colonels Adelbert Ames and Joshua L. Chamberlain. The regiment is often remembered for its stand at Little Round Top at Gettysburg, where Chamberlain's defense was pivotal in preserving the Union line.
