Symbolism

The blue cross represents service in the Civil War, while the red cross pattée symbolizes the 18th Division, V Corps, which the regiment served in during that period. The giant cactus signifies service in the Mexican War; the five-bastioned fort denotes service in the Spanish-American War, as it was the badge of the V Corps in Cuba. The arrows and quiver represent the Indian campaigns, and the bolo symbolizes service during the Philippine Insurrection.
