Description:
A shield blazoned: Or, a lion rampant Gules, in chief a bar gemel rompu Sable, with the dexter side engouled by the head of a boar couped at the ears and issuant from the edge of the shield, and the sinister side by the head of a lion, both of the last. Attached below and to the sides of the shield, a red scroll turned gold inscribed VETO in gold letters.
Symbolism:
The shield symbolizes the Regiment's notable service in France, specifically the cutting of the railway line between Montmedy and Sedan on November 6, 1918, from positions near Stenay. The arms of Montmedy bear a black lion, Sedan a black boar, and Stenay a gold lion rampant. The two broken bars represent the disrupted railroad line between Montmedy (black lion) and Sedan (black boar), with the Regiment’s position at Stenay indicated by the rampant red lion for Artillery. The gold shield reflects the colors of Lorraine, where the engagement occurred. The motto translates to "I Forbid."
Background:
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 57th Coast Artillery Regiment (Tractor Drawn) on February 3, 1931. It was redesignated for the 57th Field Artillery Battalion on June 27, 1952, and then for the 57th Artillery Regiment on December 12, 1958. The insignia was redesignated for the 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment effective September 1, 1971.
