The Coat of Arms of Costa Rica refers to the official heraldic emblem used by the Central American nation between 1840 and 1842. Designed during the brief First Mexican Empire rule, it was modified after Costa Rica regained its independence in 1842. The shield is divided into three fields, representing the three provinces of the country: Alajuela, Cartago, and San José. It features a volcano (symbolizing Irazú Volcano) on a plain background, with a tree on each side. Above the shield, there are five white stars arranged in an X shape, symbolizing the five cantons or provinces. The motto "Vera y Loyal" is written below, meaning 'True and Loyal'. This emblem was replaced by the current Coat of Arms following the constitutional reform of 1842, but it remains an important historical symbol of Costa Rica's early years.
