The Coat of Arms of Costa Rica refers to the national heraldic symbol used by the Central American republic between 1964 and 1998. This emblem, a visual representation of the nation's heritage and values, is composed of several distinctive elements. At its center, a white shield portrays five volcanoes, symbolizing Costa Rica's geographical features. The shield is encircled by two branches, one of coffee (representing economic prosperity) and the other of laurel (signifying honor and victory). Above the shield, an open book stands for education and democracy, while a Tropic of Cancer symbol beneath emphasizes Costa Rica's tropical location. The shield is supported by two white rams, representing courage, strength, and vigilance. This specific version of the Coat of Arms was officially adopted on October 27, 1964, and was replaced in 1998 by a slightly modified design that remains in use today.
