The Coat of Arms of East Germany, also known as the State Emblem of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), is a heraldic design that represents the former socialist state in Germany from 1949 to 1990. The emblem consists of a circular shield divided into three equal sectors, each symbolizing one of East Germany's three constituent states: Saxony, Brandenburg, and Thuringia. The central image is the crowned oak leaf and acorn, a traditional symbol of Prussia, representing the fourth constituent state, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which was united with the other states during the formation of East Germany. Below the shield, an inscription reads "Proletarier aller Länder, vereinigt Euch!" ("Workers of all lands, unite!") – a slogan originating from the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The Coat of Arms of East Germany was officially adopted on October 7, 1959, and remained in use until reunification with West Germany in 1990. After reunification, its usage was prohibited as a symbol of the former communist state. However, today it serves as an important historical artifact representing the political identity of East Germany during the Cold War era.
