The Royal Coat of Arms of Greece used from 1863 to 1936 is a heraldic emblem that served as the official symbol of the Kingdom of Greece during this period. Designed by King George I, it incorporated several symbolic elements significant to Greek history and culture. The shield features a white field with a black fret, representing the ancient Parthenon frieze. A gold lion passant guardant, a Byzantine imperial symbol, is placed in the center. Above the shield, an open royal crown known as the 'Stefanos' can be found. The crest consists of three helmets, each crowned with a feather, with a golden cross above them. The coat of arms also includes two supporting figures: the goddess Athena and the mythical hero Heracles. Both stand on clouds and hold olive branches and spears, symbolizing peace and war, respectively. The motto 'Ελεύθερα η Μουναχόωμεν' (Macedonian: Elefthera Ei Mounachomen, English: Free or Die) is inscribed on a scroll beneath the shield. This emblem was replaced by the current Royal Coat of Arms of Greece following the abolition of the Greek monarchy in 1936, and its historical significance continues to be recognized today.
