Soyuz 31 (Soyuz Space Programme) Soyuz 31 was a manned Soviet spacecraft mission launched as part of the Soyuz program on August 29, 1976. The mission, carrying cosmonauts Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Oleg Makarov, was intended to dock with the Salyut 5 orbital station for a long-duration stay. However, during the approach, an automatic abort sequence was triggered due to an incorrect calculation of the spacecraft's trajectory. The incident marked the first aborted automated rendezvous in spaceflight history and led to significant changes in the Soyuz program's software and procedures. Dzhanibekov and Makarov returned safely to Earth, landing on August 31, 1976. Despite the unsuccessful mission, the two cosmonauts continued their careers in space exploration, with Dzhanibekov later serving as a flight engineer during the first ever spacewalk of the Mir space station.
