The State Coat of Arms of the Netherlands is the official heraldic symbol representing the Dutch Kingdom. The design consists of a shield divided into four quarters, each with a unique charge. In the first quarter, there is a black field with three gold lions (symbolizing Guelders). The second quarter shows a black field with a silver 'X' cross (symbolizing Frisia). The third quarter features a red field with a white lion rampant (symbolizing Groningen). Lastly, the fourth quarter contains a blue field with three white bars (symbolizing Friesland). Above the shield is an open royal crown known as a 'crown of Holland', and supporting the shield are two golden lions. The coat of arms has been in use since 1543 and underwent minor modifications over time, such as the addition of the fleur-de-lis to commemorate the accession of King Willem III in 1890.
