STS 108, also known as Atlantis mission STS-108, was a space shuttle mission conducted by NASA from December 5 to December 22, 2001. This was the fourth flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis and the first expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) under Expedition 4. The primary objective of STS-108 was to deliver supplies, crew rotation, and a Russian-built airlock module to the ISS. The mission crew consisted of Commander Kenneth Cockrell, Pilot Michael Bloomfield, Mission Specialist Michael Lopez-Alegria, Mission Specialists Janice Voss, Miguel A. López-Alegría, and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin. During the mission, Atlantis docked with the ISS on its second attempt due to a technical issue at the first docking attempt. The crew then transferred supplies, performed station maintenance, and participated in various scientific experiments. They also spent nearly 6 hours completing three spacewalks for external station assembly work. Upon completion of their mission objectives, Atlantis undocked from the ISS and landed safely back at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on December 22, 2001, marking the end of STS-108. This mission was significant as it was a crucial step towards fully crewing and expanding the International Space Station for continued scientific research and exploration.
