Uncle John Sedgwick was a prominent Union Army officer during the U.S. Civil War, holding the rank of Major General and commanding the Sixth Corps. He is particularly notable for his role in several significant battles, including Antietam, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania Court House. Sedgwick met his untimely demise on May 9, 1864, during the Battle of Cold Harbor in Virginia, when he was struck by a Confederate sniper's bullet while observing the battlefield from an exposed position.
