Description
A shield blazoned: Or, a bar wavy Vert, overall on a saltire Gules a fleur-de-lis of the first fimbriated to chief and base of the third. Attached below and to the sides of the shield is a gold scroll inscribed "VIGILANTIA ET VIS" in red letters.
Symbolism
The colors yellow and green represent Armor. The fleur-de-lis on a red saltire, elements from the coat of arms of the 174th Infantry Regiment, signify the organization's historical connection to that unit and its campaign awards from the Civil War and World War I. The wavy bar refers to the organization's home area near Buffalo, an important inland port. The motto translates to "Vigilance and Strength."
Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 27th Reconnaissance Battalion on August 5, 1955. It was redesignated for the 121st Armor Regiment on March 16, 1962, and then for the 121st Cavalry Regiment on July 11, 1967.
