Description/Blazon
A blue saltire with white five-pointed stars at each arm's terminus, diagonally oriented from upper left to lower right. In front of the saltire is a horizontal gold anchor, with its crown to the left and a gold cable passing through the anchor ring and behind the saltire's arms. A vertical stylized red arrowhead, touching the two upper arms of the saltire, surmounts a gold sun with rays extending above the saltire. Overlaying the arrowhead is a gold unsheathed sword, point up, with the ends of the guard connecting to the inner edges of the lower arms of the saltire and the pommel resting on a continuation of the gold anchor cable. The blade extends below the saltire and the hilt is above the anchor cable, all in red. The areas between the anchor, anchor cable, arrowhead, and saltire are stippled gold, with a gold motto scroll below bearing the inscription "AMERICAL" in blue letters. The scroll ends at the lower arms of the saltire, with the area between the scroll and anchor cable also stippled gold.
Symbolism
The blue saltire (or cross of St. Andrew) represents New Caledonia, where the Division was formed and first activated on 27 May 1942. It, along with the four white stars, forms a "Southern Cross," symbolizing the Division’s shoulder sleeve insignia and initial area of service. The four stars, the brightest in the Southern Cross constellation, commemorate the Division’s four World War II campaigns: Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Leyte, and Southern Philippines. The anchor symbolizes the Presidential Unit Citation (Navy) awarded for Guadalcanal, while the red arrowhead and Philippine sun denote the Southern Philippines assault landing and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation (17 October 1944 to 4 July 1945). The unsheathed sword, point up, signifies the Division’s recent activation in Vietnam. The motto "AMERICAL" reflects the Division’s unique name and its inspirational and historical significance.
Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 14 December 1967.
