Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 517th Coast Artillery (Antiaircraft) Regiment on April 7, 1938. It was redesignated for the 78th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment on October 31, 1940, and again for the 78th AAA Gun Battalion on June 23, 1949. The insignia was redesignated for the 78th Antiaircraft Artillery Missile Battalion on June 19, 1956, and finally for the 517th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on December 29, 1958.
